For couples in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut who need time, clarity, and a space that holds the full weight of what’s happening between you

Weekly therapy is valuable and effective for many couples. Extended sessions simply offer a different kind of container — more time, fewer interruptions, and a chance to sit with what surfaces instead of shelving it until next week.

Some couples find that this format helps them get underneath long-standing patterns more quickly. Others simply feel more grounded when they don’t have to rush

A different kind of space:

Sunlit balcony with a hanging wicker chair with white cushions, surrounded by potted plants, and large glass windows showing a cityscape with trees and high-rise buildings.

Extended sessions are for:

Extended work is often a good fit for couples who feel like every conflict starts somewhere small — dishes, plans, timing, chores — but quickly opens the door to the bigger questions:

“How can we have the same fight again?”

“Why does everything blow up?”

“Why don’t you get it?”

“You never understand me”

“We can never move on”

It’s not about the dishwasher. It’s about the deeper injuries and adaptations that get activated underneath it.

 FAQs

  • An extended session is simply a longer, structured therapy appointment — 90 minutes, 3 hours, or 6 hours — designed to give couples enough space to understand what’s happening beneath recurring conflict. It’s not a replacement for weekly therapy; it’s an option for couples who benefit from fewer interruptions and a deeper pace.

  • This format is often helpful for couples who find themselves stuck in the same loop: the argument starts small (dishes, schedules, tone) and quickly escalates into fear, resentment, disconnection, or questions about the future. If you’re carrying trauma histories, facing a major life transition, or feeling unsure about staying together, the additional time can help you gain clarity.

  • Lyn is a Discernment Counseling Master Practitioner, trauma specialist, and RLT-informed clinician who works at the intersection of attachment, neurobiology, and relational patterns. She’s trained specifically to help couples at crossroads, navigating ambivalence, or facing complex trauma dynamics. She also works comfortably with LGBTQ+ couples, CNM/open relationships, interfaith partnerships, and neurodivergent-mixed dynamics.

  • No single session — extended or not — can promise that. Extended work offers clarity, movement, and understanding of your patterns. Some couples use extended sessions once and continue in weekly therapy; others use them periodically during harder seasons. The focus is insight and direction, not guarantees.

  • Not necessarily. They can support weekly therapy, offer a jump-start, or function as a standalone format depending on your situation. Lyn will help you determine the best fit without pushing one model over another.

  • Yes. Many couples use extended sessions when one or both partners are unsure about continuing the relationship. Lyn’s training as a Discernment Counseling Master Practitioner supports mixed-agenda couples in gaining clarity without pressure to choose a particular outcome.

  • Yes. Lyn regularly works with couples exploring new possibilities — opening up, rebuilding trust, renegotiating agreements, or reconnecting after long stretches of emotional distance.
